Mandi Woodruff writing for Yahoo Finance this morning talks about Why making Community College Free won’t solve the student debt crisis…or really make much difference in the whole dissolving system. Why? Because Community College students are the least committed to education. And, because Community Colleges aren’t doing a very good job of promoting social mobility. Touted as an inexpensive launch pad to a four year degree, research shows us that only about 10% of community college students attain their four year degrees. The drop out rates are high in Community College. The students typically are working and going to school and many of them drop the school for the job. And, this is important, the wages associated with the two year associates degree are actually dropping…from $30,100 per year ten years ago to $25,900 today.
It’s cheap…maybe even free…but does it get you anywhere?
